Tanzania Election Violence Leaves 518 Dead, Opposition Cries 'Whitewash'
According to an officially appointed commission of inquiry, the violent events following Tanzania's general election in 2025 led to 518 deaths and the injuring of more than 2,000 citizens. As reported, 197 individuals were killed in the violence through gunfire, but the report did not indicate who was responsible, and as a result, the major opposition party, Chadema, called the report a "whitewash" of the violence. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who received 98% of votes and whose victory was disputed by international organizations because of fraud suspicions, praised the efforts of her security forces and attributed the violence to a conspiracy against the government, making the country "ungovernable."
